Swan Meadow, Ham Lane, Burwash

Coronavirus Community Support Fund

The BPFA Committee is pleased to announce that we have been awarded a grant from The National Lottery Community Fund.

The grant will enable us to continue to maintain Swan Meadow and its facilities for the benefit of the community and the wider public. Funds are used to ensure the safety and availability of the field and premises, and are used to maintain the fabric of the building and upkeep of the grounds

The many groups within the Burwash Parish who benefit from the work of BPFA, and our supporters are:-

  • residents of Burwash Parish and the wider public have access to the playing field
  • children and families who use the play area and adult exercise equipment
  • elderly residents who attend Movement to Music classes in the pavilion
  • local beaver and cubs scout groups
  • Burwash CE Primary school pupils sports day
  • Burwash Cricket Club and training for youngsters
  • Burwash Tennis Club include young players as well as adults
  • Burwash Horticultural Society hold their annual shows in the pavilion
  • Burwash Parish Council hold public meetings
  • Burwash group AGMs are held in the pavilion
  • Burwash Over 50’s Walking Footballers

The grant will enable us to meet our financial commitments that include insurance, utility bills, play area inspection, fire safety inspection and ground maintenance costs while we can’t fund raise due to COVID-19.  COVID also means we are unable to take bookings for the pavilion or hold fund-raising events such as Burwash Fair where lots of local groups and larger organisations all come together to boost their funds and ours.

The award will go a long way towards ensuring that we can keep the playing field and its facilities to the correct standard for use by all despite COVID.

Burwash Playing Field Association

(Registered Charity 305191)

Ham Lane, Burwash

The Annual August Bank Holiday Burwash Fair has been postponed for 2020.

The BPFA was set up to administer and manage Swan Meadow Playing Field in Ham Lane, Burwash. The site is registered as a charity and maintained as a playing field in perpetuity for the village.  It is one of the jewels in the crown of Burwash village. It is OUR green space. We should protect it, use it – and do everything we can to enjoy it.

The pavilion and sports hall on Swan Meadow were constructed in 1998 at the same time as the two all-weather tennis courts with the assistance of a Sports Council Lottery grant. The playing field, pavilion and the children’s play area are maintained by fundraising and donations which the BPFA Committee administer and manage. The tennis courts are maintained by agreement by the Burwash Lawn Tennis Club.

The pavilion is a great venue for children’s parties as it is a safe area, well away from the main road and has the playing field and children’s play area nearby for children and families to enjoy. Please see below for booking contacts.

Burwash Fair on August Bank Holiday Monday is the single largest annual fundraising event for Swan Meadow and the sports hall and is run by the BPFA to help meet annual costs and also enables other charitable groups within the community and national charities to raise funds for their needs.

Swan Meadow is the base for the Village Cricket, Football & Tennis Clubs as well as the Burwash Bonfire Society, Burwash Horticultural Society and a number of other groups. It is also used by Burwash C.E.P. School for sports day, games and out of school clubs.

The Officers and Committee of the BPFA are appointed by election at the Annual General Meeting each April for the forthcoming year and are trustees of the association.

The BPFA 2020 AGM has been deferred until such time as it can be held in public.
