November report

The order has been placed and deposit paid (mainly to cover the cost of the timber) for our replacement Oriel windows at the front of the main Hall, and the window at the front of the Snooker Room. I am delighted to report that our appeal funds have been boosted by a grant of £3,000, plus a generous donation from a Hall user. She made her donation direct to the Hall bank account and we are very grateful. Our bank details are NatWest, sort code: 60-10-30, account number 60863463: please mark the transfer BVH Windows Appeal. We thank everyone for helping us maintain our beautiful Village Hall, which was built for the benefit of all our village residents. Please remember that I do not have on-line access to the bank account, and have to wait patiently for bank statements to arrive through the post before I can write to thank people for their donations.

The hard work has started, applying for grants to raise more of the necessary funding. We have drawn up a list of what we would love to achieve should we be successful with these applications, including replacement windows along the side of the Snooker Room and in the rear store room. This will mean that all the windows in the building will then have been replaced: a major achievement! We have also obtained quotes for wooden replacement front doors.

In October, Mary ran her successful Soup Lunch in the Village Hall and has donated the proceeds (over £415) to our fund. As always, the soups and desserts were delicious and the ladies in the kitchen helped create a happy atmosphere during the lunch. My thanks go to Mary, her helpers in the kitchen, Jackie (tombola), Ann and Linda (raffle) and Thilo (postcard sales) for their support and for giving up their time so generously. The total raised so far stands at £26,230. I have applied to HMRC for the refund of some gift aid on donations, and this will further boost the total. Our plan is for the work to be carried out in August 2020 and we therefore have 10 months (the clock is ticking!) to raise the rest of the funds needed. Thank you to everyone who has helped in any way, whether large or small: we are very grateful.

I forgot to mention last month that I have two items which have not been returned to their owner(s) following the Bygone Burwash exhibition: an article about the Gardening Class at St Philip’s School, Burwash Weald, and a booklet about the Burwash Village sign. I shall be very happy to return them to their owners upon request.

After producing picture postcards showing views of Burwash, which are being sold in aid of our Appeal, Thilo is finalising the Burwash Calendars for 2020. This year he will be selling A4 calendars (£7 each) and slim-line calendars (£5 each). Please look out for them on sale at the Village Stores and at events held in the Hall: they contain some beautiful photos.

We shall again be selling tickets at just £1 each for the Burwash Village Hall Christmas Hamper Raffle. Tickets will be on sale at the Burwash Festive Evening on Wednesday 4th December. As previous winners can (and have) testified the hamper is packed full of goodies!

A reminder that Whist sessions are held in the Hall on the first Thursday in the month, starting at 7pm. We are a friendly group of players and are delighted to welcome newcomers. No experience is necessary as we provide ‘gentle’ tuition. We play 20 hands and enjoy light refreshments half-way through the evening. There are prizes for the 4 highest scorers. Our next sessions will be on Thursdays 7th November and 5th December.
